Event Description

Paulo Freire was a renowned thinker and practitioner in adult education but his influence has been found as much outside the classroom as within it.  Freire's approach was always to seek first to understand the community in which he was engaged and to focus on the issues of concern that its people faced.

The day will include presentations, videos and workshop discussion with an emphasis on relating Freire's insights to our own professional and community involvements.

Outline of Sessions

  • Session 1: Freire as an Educator.  Paulo Freire's basic methodology and its application in a variety of contexts outside the classroom.
  • Session 2: Freire as a Thinker.  The influences on Freire's thought and how he in turn influenced others.
  • Session 3: Freire as an Activist.  Paulo Freire's emphasis on change and transformation.
  • Session 4: The Relevance of Paulo Freire Today.  How can we understand and make use of Freire's approach in our own contexts?
