Information about the SW

The scale: At 24,000 sq kms, the Southwest region is almost certainly the most disfunctional and most difficult to manage 'region': it is nearly 300 miles long from the tiny unitary of Scilly, to Swindon.

The identity crisis: Poole considers itself Southern England, Gloucester in the Midlands and Cornwall a separate country! The 'centre' of the region is disputed and Bristol is the principal urban centre (popn c. 500,000).

Key Issues:

- Severe urban deprivation (for example parts of Bristol)

- Growing pains (Swindon)

- Rural poverty (e.g. North Devon)

- Structural / peripheral neglect (Cornwall)
