Universal basic income trials being considered in Scotland - The Guardian

Scotland looks set to be the first part of the UK to pilot a basic income for every citizen, as councils in Fife and Glasgow investigate trial schemes in 2017.

The councillor Matt Kerr has been championing the idea through the ornate halls of Glasgow City Chambers, and is frank about the challenges it poses.

“Like a lot of people, I was interested in the idea but never completely…

Truth and justice in a year of living dangerously - Jeff Goulding

In a year in which the human race took a giant leap back in time, revisiting the politics and economics of the 1930s, there is scant comfort on offer. There is trouble and strife in all directions of the globe.

In Europe decades of…

Nigel Farage’s attack on Jo Cox’s widower is a new low. Enough: Owen Jones.

No more pussyfooting around: Nigel Farage and his associates have poisoned our country’s political culture, and it’s time to push back. Their offensive – in every sense of the word – has been so swift, so devastating, that we risk normalising it.…

Why the United States is at war with itself. The End of History is just the beginning. By Nafeez Ahmed

The heads of the CIA and FBI have both come on the record to say that America’s traditional enemy, Russia, covertly interfered in the elections by hacking the Democrat Party.

Whether you believe this story or not is…

Climate change played a role in dozens of floods, heatwaves, and droughts last year - Natasha Geiling

In late September of 2015, residents of Miami woke up to find their streets inundated with several feet of water. But the flooding wasn’t brought by intense rainfall or a tropical storm — it was the result of historically high tides combined with rapidly rising sea levels. In other…

Universal Basic Income - Peter Diamandis

Some fear that robots and AI will steal our jobs.

They probably will (in the near-term, at least half of them).

If that happens, what will we do for a living? How will we earn money?

In this blog I’ll be discussing one of the most important proposed solutions to job loss due to…

The Broken Age - Umair Haque

What is the real story of this troubled age, an era of decline and fracture?

My story is that it is a broken age. Let me tell it to you with a single statistic, and explain what it means to me, and perhaps to you.

US life expectancy is falling. Now what can a single statistic tell us? I think the story of this age is hidden in that one simple number. After all, it is not just any…

How Liberalism Failed - Umair Haque

Deep down, you know: something’s gone badly wrong with liberalism. It lost its soul, somehow. Today, what is left of it is being repudiated across the world, rejected by society after society.

Why? I want to tell you the story of how liberalism failed. My story won’t be about money, power, and scandal. It will be about ideas. One idea, to be precise.

What is the most fundamental belief…

This is the Britain (America and Europe) we live in today!

Teresa May, our new PM, stated that she wants a Britain that works for all and not just the wealthy and influential.  She re-stated this view at the recent Tory Conference, yet the reality is very different.  If one reads the newspapers, watches or listens to the news, it is not hard to see that what she and her colleagues say in public and what is real are completely at odds.  By simply perusing the information that is in the public domain, it is clear that the Tory party is…

Hammond fiddles while the economy burns up

We had to wait for elder statesman Ken Clarke in questions from MPs to introduce, ever so gently, a reference to the threat of recession. It was the first and last time even a hint of reality entered the proceedings of the chancellor’s autumn statement.

Beyond the borders of the UK, however, and beyond the influence of the Tory government, the global economy is riven with crises of unprecedented proportions. Their consequences are being felt everywhere…

Culture Matters - David Malone

Over the last few months the Brexit debate brought to a head long running arguments about immigration, racism and multiculturalism. It has not been uplifting. People accused each other of being racists, haters, ignorant and lost, as simmering discontents and prejudices all came to the boil. Is it possible to address any of the issues from a different starting place, one that might be less polarised and poisoned? Here is my attempt.…

Only a struggle for democratic power can defeat Trump and the system

In 1989 US philosopher Francis Fukuyama announced that  political history would end by showing, as the Cold War finished, that constitutional, representative democracy and capitalism like America’s would prove the only viable system for the modern age.

This week a right-wing led insurgency against the very same political and economic system propelled maverick billionaire…

Only a struggle for democratic power can defeat Trump and the system

This week a right-wing led insurgency against the very same political and economic system propelled maverick billionaire…

The Britain that Theresa May is trying to build has unstable foundations - Caroline Lucas

Prime ministers like to build big things. They like to wear high-visibility jackets and watch concrete being poured. They like to cut ribbons. And they like a legacy.

Theresa May is different from past prime ministers in many ways, but it seems…

Tackling climate change demands democratic revolution

The Tory government’s decision to support construction of a third runway at Heathrow Airport underlines how the political and corporate world have become entirely alienated from the real world. This alienation is an outcome of the fundamental alienation at the heart of the capitalist system.

Humanity missing in action: The uncivilised west - Jeff Goulding
