“We need a general election and we need one now because we have at this moment a one-off chance to get this done while the European Union agrees its negotiating position and before the detailed talks begin…I thought about this long and hard and came to the decision that to provide for that stability and certainty, this was the way to do it. “
-Theresa May, April 19th.
The whole election, and it’s results, has been one big serving of irony. Sweet irony. It was never to be called, and this was promised several times (7 times, according to Time magazine). One blue-dominated election poll later, and some inflated egos, and the never to be called election was called. It was called quickly, leaving 7 weeks for campaigning, and with no opposition party with it’s shit together, it was in the bag. The biggest majority seen since the dawn of time was in reach, and Mrs. May’s ‘democratically’ elected authoritarian rule would be in place. Or so we all thought.
