Research: Impact of Universal Credit Round 4

The roll-out of Universal Credit looks set to continue this winter with work and pensions secretary, David Gauke, rejecting suggestions to pause the process in order to smooth out the flaws in the system, particularly the 42 day wait for the first benefit payment which has resulted in many claimants being forced into debt and rent arrears . Opposition to this continuation has been expressed by 14 Tory backbenchers as well as Labour MPs Jim McMahon, Jo Platt as well as a stern warning from Andy Burnham that rough sleeping will double if the roll-out continues.
